In the garden or indoors: 13 pet-safe plants

Par Béatrice Briolle
chien qui sent des fleurs

There is nothing like beautiful plants and flowers to brighten up your home or garden. Not only do they create a warm and inviting atmosphere, but they also add color and sometimes even help purify the air inside your home.

However, it is important to choose your plants carefully, as some can be toxic to pets. To help you make the right choices, here is a selection of plants that are perfectly safe for your furry friends.

01

Catnip or cat grass

Looking for a non-toxic indoor plant that is also beneficial for your cat’s health? Catnip, also known as cat grass, is a great option!

02

African violet

Whether violet, white, or pink, this flower is both beautiful and safe for dogs and cats. It is a perfect choice for pet-friendly households.

03

Bamboo

Native to China, bamboo belongs to the grass family and grows well both indoors and outdoors. Your cat may enjoy scratching its stem if placed outside, and your dog can nibble on its leaves without harm.

04

Christmas cactus

The Christmas cactus is non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, avoid letting your pets chew on it, as it may still cause mild digestive issues. It remains a great option during the holiday season.

05

Spider plant (Chlorophytum)

This easy-to-grow plant is non-toxic to pets and looks great either on a balcony or indoors.

06

Ponytail palm (Beaucarnea)

With its sturdy, rounded trunk, this plant may quickly become your cat’s favorite scratching spot. Cats can also nibble on the leaves safely.

07

Moth orchid (Phalaenopsis)

Orchids are stunning flowers, and the good news is they are perfectly safe for pets. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors, each more beautiful than the last.

08

Pachira or money tree

This hardy, easy-to-grow houseplant is not only pet-safe but also known for its air-purifying properties. Truly the best of both worlds!

09

Impatiens

These bright-colored flowers do well in planters or garden beds. Their leaves and blossoms are safe for curious noses and gentle nibblers.

10

Sunflower

Who doesn’t love these bright yellow flowers that resemble the sun? Sunflowers do well in gardens or vases. Just make sure they are true sunflowers and not daisies, which may look similar but are toxic to pets.

11

Indoor banana plant

Increasingly popular in garden centers, the banana plant creates a bold visual statement indoors and is completely harmless to pets.

12

Rose

No matter the variety, roses are a beautiful and fragrant addition to any home or garden and are perfectly safe for your pets.

13

Aromatic herbs

Grow fresh herbs in pots on your balcony or plant them directly in your garden. These herbs are safe for pets and will always be on hand to enhance your meals:

  • Mint
  • Sage
  • Thyme
  • Parsley
  • Rosemary
  • Lemon balm
  • Lavender

To conclude, keep in mind that just because a plant is non-toxic does not mean it cannot cause mild digestive issues if your pet eats too much of it.
