When animals make us better humans

On a day off, I went to the movies. There were maybe twenty people in the theatre. Since I don’t like noise very much, I brought my earplugs, just enough to muffle the sound without completely isolating myself. A few rows behind me, a couple started talking. Loudly, and often. At first, I didn’t say anything. Then I gave them a look. Then a “shhh.” Then another one, more insistent. The usual escalation. A man sitting not far from me also tried a “shush.”

But nothing worked. They commented on the movie as if they were in their living room. They made predictions about how the story would unfold, talked about the actors, and shared their impressions out loud.

Honestly, they talked every five minutes. Exasperated, I turned around and saw that they were a very elderly couple. I thought maybe they didn’t hear very well and that I could make an extra effort.

Actually, it was nice to see two older people still enjoying going out together. But they kept talking! But they kept talking. At the end, during the credits, I turned toward them with an annoyed look. The man who had also tried to silence them earlier stared at them too.

The old man looked at us. He gave us a thumbs up, with a mocking expression on his face. At the time, it really annoyed me. Then I wondered if maybe I had overreacted. I felt like the grumpy person in the theatre. I could have taken a breath, let it go, or moved to another seat.

But it’s not always easy to stop impatience from getting the better of us.

Then I thought of Coby, my big black furry dog. He probably would have sighed heavily and simply found a new spot. And he probably would have been right.

On my way home, I thought that maybe we should take inspiration from animals more often. Focus on kindness rather than impatience. Stay calm and move on. It might make us better people.

What about you? Are you the type to talk in a movie theatre or stay quiet?

Choosing a name for a pet is often a moment of pure joy. We look for a name that reflects our companion’s personality, makes us smile, or tells a story. And every year, new trends emerge!

I had fun imagining the names that could be all the rage in Quebec in 2026. Here are my predictions… Do they inspire you?

CATS

ChatGPT
Artificial intelligence is now part of our daily lives. A name this clever is hard to ignore!

Stat
The TV series STAT continues to captivate Quebec. A perfect name for a quick, curious cat who’s always on the move.

Mandy
A nod to a restaurant chain we all love, everyone has their favorite salad there. A sweet, warm, and slightly indulgent name.

Charlotte
Inspired by Charlotte Cardin, an artist I really love. An elegant, gentle, and radiant name.

Kukum
A reference to Michel Jean’s novel that touched many readers and reached far beyond our borders. A tender name, rich in meaning and history.

Horace
Inspired by the Quebec jewelry brand. Delicate, elegant, and proudly local, perfect for a refined cat with a noble posture.

Keanu
Like actor Keanu Reeves, who is Canadian. For a calm, observant cat with quiet strength… and a name you can stretch out when calling: “Keaaaanuuu” (almost like a meow!).

Chani
Drawn from the ever-present Dune universe. A soft, airy, slightly mystical name.

Miso
A wink to the comfort-bowl trend. For a sweet and cuddly cat.

Oolong
Like the tea I adore: aromatic, comforting, and a little zen.

DOGS

Pixel
Short, cute, and modern. Perfect for a small, alert, energetic dog.

Oka
Like Quebec’s beloved cheese. Simple, gentle, and authentic, ideal for a big-hearted dog.

Jay
As in Jay Du Temple. Approachable, warm, and always in a good mood. One syllable makes for an effective recall.

Moka
As comforting as a hot drink on a winter day.

Boréal
A name that evokes our forests, clear northern nights, and our Nordic spirit. Soft, beautiful, and deeply local.

Fouki
The rapper with the contagious smile you hear everywhere. For a joyful, lively, slightly mischievous dog!

Flair
The nickname of your favorite magazine, just as charming in French as in English.

Matcha
The iconic neighborhood café drink. For a gentle, sociable, slightly “velcro” dog.

McIntosh
Because Quebec is a major apple producer. A gentle, familiar, and warm name that’s easy to say every day.

Mocktail
Non-alcoholic drinks are having a moment. A light, sociable name with a touch of humor.

Bot
A little nod to the technology taking up space in our lives. For a smart, curious, energetic dog.

Shiatsu
Because nothing compares to the well-being of a good massage. And I bet Shih Tzu owners will love the wordplay.

And you? What is your four-legged companion’s name, and why?

Tell me : behind every name, there’s a story, a memory, or a spark of love.

Comparative anatomy and physiology play an important role in veterinary medicine. Understanding how differences in structure and function between species influence their daily lives and behaviours is both fascinating and enriching. For your information (and for fun!), here are a few interesting facts comparing key senses in dogs, cats, and humans.

Vision: seeing the world differently

Rods are responsible for night vision and motion detection. In dogs and cats, most photoreceptors (that is, light-sensitive cells that convert light into electrical signals) are rods. This allows them to see much better than us in low-light conditions.

Our pets’ eyes also contain a structure called the tapetum lucidum, which reflects light back toward the rods, amplifying available light. In cats, this structure is more developed than in dogs, making them true champions of night vision.

Colour perception

Colour vision depends on the presence of photoreceptors called cones, located in the retina. In humans, cones make up 100% of the center of the retina, whereas in dogs they represent only about 10%.

Dogs and cats have what is known as dichromatic vision, meaning they perceive only two types of colors: blue and yellow-green. Humans, on the other hand, have trichromatic vision, allowing them to distinguish blue, green, and red.

To illustrate these differences*:

HUMAN

CAT

Maximum cone concentration (colour vision)

199,000

27,000

Maximum rod concentration (night vision)

160,000

460,000

Smell and taste: each species has its own particularities

Humans have about 5 million olfactory receptors, while dogs and cats can have over 200 million. Cats appear to be even more efficient than dogs and humans, when it comes to distinguishing odours.

There are three types of olfactory receptors. The V1R receptor is responsible for the ability to differentiate one odour from another. Humans have two variants, dogs have nine, and cats have no fewer than thirty.

When it comes to taste, cats have only a few hundred taste buds (around 470 on average), dogs have about 1,700, and humans nearly 9,000. Dogs are sensitive to sweet flavors and often prefer new, fatty foods, much like we do. Cats, however, respond mainly to salty, sour, and bitter flavors and have a very limited response to sweetness.

When encouraging a dog or a cat to eat, smell therefore plays a much more important role than taste.

Hearing: detecting the invisible

Humans can hear sounds ranging from 20 Hz to 19,000 Hz. Cats can hear frequencies from 20 Hz up to 100,000 Hz, while dogs hear from 15 Hz to 65,000 Hz.

The ability of dogs and cats to move their ear pinnae allows them to pinpoint the source of sounds much more precisely than humans.

A very different perception of the world

It’s important to remember that dogs and cats do not perceive the world the same way we do. Very faint odors or sounds that are imperceptible to us can be extremely overwhelming for our four-legged companions.

I will always remember a trip to the beach with my husband. Sitting at an outdoor snack bar, we ordered hot dogs and hamburgers. We offered a piece of hamburger to a cat that was begging for food. The cat refused it right away… but happily accepted a piece of the hot dog! We decided to heed the warning and ended up eating only the hot dogs ourselves.

In conclusion

Comparing the senses of dogs, cats, and humans reminds us just how differently our companions experience the world. Their vision, sense of smell, and hearing shape their daily reactions and preferences. Understanding these differences helps us interact with them in a more respectful and appropriate way.

Dogs are opportunistic creatures, meaning they are motivated by access to “resources” they value. And of course, every dog has their own preferences based on their personality.

For your dog, a valued resource might include cuddles, treats, attention from certain people, playtime, food, and more. Some dogs love sleeping with their humans, while others don’t enjoy it at all.

Coby, my big, fluffy black dog, doesn’t want to sleep with us. He gets too warm. He much prefers the comfort of the sofa or one of his big dog beds. On hot days, he even chooses the floor. At other times of the day, you might find him stretched out on our bed. He’s allowed there, but it’s not his usual sleeping spot. Tchili, our late little terrier, refused to sleep in our bed, as she had her own comfy beds. She didn’t like movement around her. Her little sleeping nest gave her a peaceful retreat. Dragon, our late Boston Terrier, wasn’t allowed to sleep in our room because his snoring was just too loud. He slept on the living room couch instead.

Dominant?

Dominance is defined as a relationship between two or more individuals that is established through force, aggression, and submission in order to access resources. Many behaviors that are often wrongly labeled as dominance come from a decades-old study that observed captive wolves. The environment of captivity limited their territory and changed their resource behaviors. Later studies on wolves in the wild showed different dynamics.

There is also no clear consensus on whether dominance exists between two different species. It’s important to distinguish between dominance, which is about competition for resources, and predator-prey relationships.

Dogs were domesticated roughly 20,000 years ago. Their behavior is no longer the same as their ancestor, the wolf. Today’s dogs are not in a constant struggle for survival, at least I hope not. Personally, I aim to have a relationship with my dog that is built on leadership and friendship. I want my dog to want to do what I ask (like coming when called) because they trust me and know it’s a positive experience. I don’t want a relationship based on anxiety or fear of punishment.

Anxiety?

That said, behaviors that are sometimes interpreted as dominance are often rooted in fear or anxiety. A dog that growls in a new situation is expressing discomfort, not attempting to assert dominance. We’ll explore that more in other articles.

Own Your Choice

Ultimately, whether you choose to let your dog sleep in your bed or not should depend on your own preferences and your dog’s. Sleeping in your bed will not make them more or less dominant. If you choose to allow it, the goal should be that both of you sleep well and that the decision works for everyone in the household. Make sure your choice is consistent. If it’s yes today and no tomorrow, it can be confusing for your dog, who may need time to adjust. Be patient. Sleep well!
